Sighting at the Supermarket

My children are always coming up with new ways to embarrass me.

Today in Jewel Audrey starts exclaiming "Mom, I see Santa!" I continue pushing the cart and essentially ignore her as she then proclaims it's snowing outside. Ok. She's pretending. This happens a million times a day. Then, a few aisles later, somewhere between the frozen vegetables and gluten free waffles she says it again, "Mom, look, there's Santa!" And again, "Mom, look....Santa!" Then, out of the corner of my eye I see the only other person sharing the frozen section with us. An older heavier set gentleman with white hair and a hat. I immediately turn so my back  (I assume it was a man, as I didn't dare look that way) and smile briefly to myself.  I did find it funny. Although quite embarrassing. Trying to make it sound like she's indeed telling a story, I ask her if it's still snowing outside as we quickly move down the aisle. I think we're almost out of ear shot when she says again, "But Mom, there's Santa!"

Had this been anytime after November  I would have been saved. There are tons of Santa's everywhere that time of year! But May 31st is no doubt Santa's off season.

a little annoyed.

not by this temperamental weather but while I'm on the subject....seriously, let's get it together. 89 degrees. 45 degrees. 80 degrees. tornado warnings. rain and 50 degrees. ugh. My furnace and air conditioner are so confused.

Today I'm annoyed by the constant remarks by Audrey's gymnastics teacher about Allie's weight. At first I shrugged it off. It was "oh look at those thighs" or "look at those cheeks" or "you don't miss any meals, do you!?" Seriously. It's been over 8 weeks. It's not funny anymore. Today the same teacher accidently tripped over Allie and knocked her down. She apologized, but said, "I'm surprised she fell over" meaning, as solid as she is. She followed that up a few minutes later by saying, "You've got to bring her in here in the fall so she can start to run around." I almost punched her.

Now really. Do you think my daughter doesn't run around? Do you think she sits, at 17 months old and plays video games all day long!? She just started running a month or so ago. She walked when she was 9 months. She's contanstly running around the house, running away from her sister, playing outside, climbing up the ladder to go down the slide.....The girl isn't lazy.

It's that innate protection that all mother's have for their young, especially the young who can't defend themselves. It somedays just isn't funny.

Just because you say it in a cute & joking voice doesn't make it ok. If her pediatrician isn't concerned about her BMI, then I'm not either. She eats healthy foods and she's been off whole milk for months now. (Even though most kids stay on whole milk until they are 2).

Audrey was "chubbier" than other kids her age but she slimmed down at about this age, and by the time she was two for sure. I imagine Allie will be the same way.

I love my kids chubby legs and pinchable cheeks. She's adorable. And she's healthy.

She's perfect.

I wonder if she was 10 percentile or  even 25 percentile if the teachers would give me a hard time about her weight. Probably not.

Lay off my daughter's adorable figure.

A sweet big sister moment

We often take a family walk after dinner. Allie in the stroller, Jeremy and I on foot and Audrey now on her new bike. Often, she beats us to the end of the sidewalk and she knows to stop. She often gets to pick which way to go next. On Tuesday night we met her at the end of the sidewalk and she says:

"That guy has a puppy (pointing to the house across the street) and Allie likes puppies, so I think we should go that way so Allie can see the puppy."

Adorable!

Fun Run: More Fun this year

The first Fun Run of the season. Where kids run half or a whole lap around the track, depending on their age. It's not a race. Everyone gets a ribbon. The program promotes physical fitness and how running can be fun. And then they serve juice and cookies afterward.

We tried this last year and it didn't go so well. Not the cookies, the running. Audrey hated it.

This year, so far she seemed to like it, despite the potty dance she was doing before the race. She really had to go, but didn't have time before her age group ran. She might have if we'd parked a little closer. It took us 15 minutes to walk from our car to the track. Note to self, we will park somewhere else next week and not follow the crowd of minivans.

This is not my favorite event; it's a claustrophobic nightmare. 800 kids, 1600 parents with cameras all trying to get to the same place. However,  it's quite the social affair. I couldn't turn around without running into someone that we know. It seems everyone in town brings their kids to this weekly event.

It's only $1 per week to run/per kid. And they have fun. Where else would we go on a Friday night for $2?

Audrey's water slide

Here's what we did yesterday:

I got this video, and then accidently dropped my iphone into the water.

Allie was content to play in the water table

What a fun day! Audrey made her own "water park" by putting our little purple pool at the bottom of the slide. This entertained her for at least an hour! She asked if we could put the pool in front of her swings so she could jump from the swings into the pool. I of course said no and tried to explain why that was a bad idea. Allie got such a kick out of the splashes Audrey would make as she landed in the pool!

There's got to be a better way

Randomly the other day Audrey asks me if I could go buy a swimsuit so I could swim with her at the pool.

(heavy sigh)

This after she asked me why I was so fat the week before. Yes, my three year old daughter comes up to me, puts her hands on my stomach and says, "Mommy, why are you fat?" Not wanting to explain that when I hit 30 my metabolism too a dive off a steep cliff and that despite the last 4 months of intense workouts it continues to be slower than molasses, I simply said, "Because I had two babies."

So, I'm really dreading going swimsuit shopping. But I don't see a way out of this.

a few days later.......

As we're driving down the road, we pass the water park and I say,

"I guess Mommy needs to go find a swimsuit."

Audrey: Do you want one like me?

me: (laugh) yes, Audrey, I would love a swimsuit like yours.

I resisted the urge to ask if they came in my size, afraid of her answer!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they've come out with a suit that magically hides all cellulite.

a dancer and a fish: last swim lessons

In the craziness that was this spring I realized I never blogged about Allie's first swim lesson and here I am writing about her last. Allie was in a parent tot class. They sang songs and gently got them used to the water with the comfort of a parent. It didn't take Allie long to feel comfortable.

There are 8 lessons in a session. At lesson 7 they took them off the diving board. I did not attend this lesson and was amazed when Daddy came home and said that Allie had jumped off the diving board to her teacher below. At lesson 8 I got to witness it myself.

Allie spent Audrey's last swim lesson scooting off the edge of the pool into Daddy's arms where he would then let her go underwater and pull her right back up. She'd come up smiling, every-time. He'd take her to back to the edge, she'd sit herself down and do it all over again.

Across the pool, Audrey's  teacher spent the majority of class trying to convince Audrey she wouldn't take her underwater like she did the previous week. Tears were shed. Many tears. She participated in a few things but really did not trust this teacher who had taken over the last few weeks of class. I felt sorry for Audrey because she had been progressing so well with her original teacher that she grew to trust. The week prior, this new teacher took Audrey underwater without warning. It took Audrey weeks to get the courage to jump to her teacher from the edge of the pool.  She really doesn't like to get water in her eyes. (And she refuses goggles) Audrey did not "graduate" to the next level. She will remain a goldfish (level 1) next session.

I'm completely convinced that the earlier you start swim lessons with your child, the better.
